Apps we couldn’t live without

Smartphones have become an essential part of our everyday life. But these days’ smartphones are used for so much more than talking or exchanging text messages. There is such a huge range of apps available and we thought it would be interesting to look at which ones, us at Waypoint couldn’t live without.

Today, Social Media and PR specialist, Hayley Coello is sharing which apps she can’t live without.

The first thing I do when I wake up and reach for my phone is check my Instagram feed. I use it like I would have used Facebook in the past, but I find it much easier and more relaxing to use than Facebook. It’s just about photos so it’s much less serious and political (much less chance of upsetting someone on Instagram by saying the wrong thing) but it’s also less cluttered. Scrolling through my Facebook news feed daily, I stumble upon the updates of so many people I do not know, whereas Instagram only shows people who I follow.

Although it’s just posting photos on Instagram, it’s amazing how much I use it for information. I use it to catch up on the news, keep up with the latest fashion ideas and celebrity gossip, keep up with my friends, gain ideas for recipes and home and garden interiors. I use my own personal Instagram page as a photobook, a way of storing my favourite photos that I can show people when out and about.

If I’m in a new place, on holiday or looking for a restaurant, this app is great for finding out the best places to stay, eat, visit and also really handy tips when you get there. You have to take it with a pinch of salt as you’re reliant on opinions, but generally it’s a good indication.

Essential to check before watching a new movie and wasting 2-3 hours of your life. Anything below 6 doesn’t make the cut for me! I also use it to catch up on the story, if I’ve not been following and don’t want to drive my husband mad by asking him!

I use Pinterest as my way of storing information I find useful, so for example if I’m flicking through a magazine and something catches my eye, I then find the product online and “pin it” in a folder that I can find at a later point. I can get lost on Pinterest finding ideas for the home, making folders for the living room, garden, recipes etc.

I can’t remember the last time I called one of my friends, we tend to WhatsApp each other. It’s so much easier and its recorded, so if you make plans you have it written down. You can take a photo or a video and send it over to a friend in an instant, along with a description of what it is. I also find the group chat so useful – you can have a multiway conversation with a group of friends.

I grew up with portable CD players, then MP3 players and when the IPod came out, this seemed the greatest thing ever. However this was a distance memory when Spotify came on the scene. No longer was there the need for CDs, pretty much any music I wanted was available on my phone. I use Spotify for all my music listening, when walking around, to play music at home and in my car.

I use this as another way to keep in touch with my friends, but in a more silly, fun way as the pictures only last a little while. It’s also a great way to entertain my nieces as they love playing with the filters.

As much as I have personally gone off Facebook in recent months and find myself replacing it with Instagram, I still can’t help myself from using my app to check the newsfeed. It’s still the place where you can keep up with friends and family’s news and I like the memories feature.
